The Palace Of Illusions

Hiii there!

Can you believe tomorrow is Friday already?! Can somebody tell the weeks to slow down please, I don’t know where time is going!

In the midst of this blur I read the “The Palace of Illusions” by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni. This book is unbelievable. It’s based on the Hindu epic “The Mahabharata” which is about 5 brothers (the pandavas) and their journey in an ancient time to work together and fight for the crown to become king of Hastinapur (which was their late fathers’ right).

However, the best part of this book was that it is from the point of view of their wife, Draupadi. (She was the wife to all five brothers). She brings a modern twist to the story and introduces issues that are unknown to the usual story told from generation to generation…such as trouble with her mother-in-law haha! It starts off as how she comes into the world with the prediction to change history, followed by her growing up in her fathers palace, her marriage and how she, too, becomes a warrior like her husbands and stays by their side until the end.

It is not supposed to be realistic but instead an age old tale of good versus evil with magical surroundings. “The Palace of illusions” is so well written that each character is relatable and the settings are described beautifully.

To be honest I haven’t read a book that captured me like this in a long time, so I would highly recommend it! (FYI you definitely do not have to be Hindu to read it 😉 )

Have you read any good books recently?

  1. I’ve heard so much about this book…all rave reviews! I’ve been looking for a good book to get into and this might be the perfect one, especially given my shortage of knowledge on The Mahabharata! Thanks for sharing and I’ll let you know what I think :)! Have a great weekend, Sonal!

    • Hahah trust me my knowledge about the story was terrible too, now i’m pretty sure I know more than my parents ! I’m also watching the series, it’s become an obsession 🙂
